I'm not a sketch artist, and haven't drawn much since highschool, so please excuse the lack of quality in this piece.
We lost a beloved family member today, and to say the least, it hurts. Josh (AKA 'EAGL You Raise Me Up' was special in so many ways. He was my daughters personal pet, and a very people oriented rat. He thrived on being near us, snuggled up to us, and being friends with us. He was also the first rat of his newly imported, rare in the US variety born in the NW USA.
My toddler daughter and him often napped together, and he wanted nothing more, than to be with his people at all time. His loyalty, and patience puts many dogs to shame.
Last year, we had a case of SDA, a deadly viral infection go through the rattery. The only reason Josh did not die, was because I was too stubborn to let him go. Many times over the 3 days of his severe illness did I almost loose him, but after losing his Mom, I couldn't do that. Sub-Q injections, oxygen, and nebulizer treatments are the only reason the boy survived then.
I did not think he'd be with us long, and every day he was here, I knew how blessed we were. Most rats after such a severe illness, become sick soon after, and can not fight those illnesses due to the stress put on their heart, and scarring in their lungs. Josh was differnt, and only until the other night he was strong, and had no problems.
We lost those wonderful pet to heart failure, most likely thanks to his past SDA, along with the stress from our record breaking heat wave here in Oregon. I think of it as, his heart was so big, and he loved so much, he just could not hold onto life any longer, and will now have to take care of us from the Rainbow Bridge.
I love you baby boy. Thank you for all your love, your dedication, your patience, and loyalty. Most of all, thank you for joining our family, and being such a bright part of our lives. Our family is richer, just because you were here.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've lost a few ratties lately. We just lost my sister's rat Curly last Thursday. Raven, our rat with the deformed front leg, had a hernia and at the last moment, Heather (my sister) decided to bring Curly along with Raven (who was having surgery that day) because he didn't seem right and the vet said it was fine. While Heather was at work, the vet called our house and told us that Curly had a large cancerous mass in his abdomin and was suffering bad. He wasn't or didn't seem to be suffering when he left for the vet in the morning. We think that when the vet was handling him, maybe something ruptured inside him. She said he was urinating all over the place. My sister was going to arrive to pick them up in a couple hours but I didn't want him to suffer a second longer so I gave the order to have him put to sleep right away. Curly would have been 3 years old on August 31 so he was quite old. My sister was really sad but appreciated me making the call because she didn't want him to hurt any more than I did and would have done the same with one of my babies.
Curly was a gray capped rex dumbo. He was incredible and always accepted new rats. Often, the youngsters would cuddle up with him for comfort and security and Curly would act as a "mama" to them. He was something else (as are all the rats we've owned and own now.
Rats make great pets (I've had ratties for 9 years). Unfortunately they have very short life spans. It is always hard loosing a pet. They are more than an animal. They are friends and family members.
Raven by the way is doing wonderful, the surgery was a success.

"I should have worn my warmer bathing suit!"~My sister when she was little.
He was. His kids here are excellent too (not the infant ones, they aren't old enough to know yet ;0P), but Joe, Vow, and Fiona really do help cut this major loss down a little... but nothing can mend the hole in my heart

To think, I was at one point considering placing his son Joe.... now Mr Joe is here to keep us company forever heehee Likely pet only (rather than breeding) because he's not to show standard, but oh well!

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
